Speaker Saturation Simulator
The Speaker Saturation Simulator, designed by STM (Sebastian Tepper), simulates the non-linear response of an overdriven speaker by using a string of diodes. It does not simulate the actual frequency response of a guitar speaker, but can complement actual cabinet simulator filters.
Principle of operation
An "ideal" loudspeaker, if overdriven, will have its coil hit the magnet, destroying the coil. In order to prevent this, guitar speakers are designed to be non-linear near the end of cone excursion. This introduces some nonlinearity and third-harmonic distortion which enhances the sound.
This circuit simulates the above effect in a controllable way. At low settings, it enhances the harmonic content, which is perceived as a slight brightness increase, as well as adding some compression to the sound. At extreme settings, it is perceived as a mild overdrive suitable for chord work and bass guitar.
